NASA is in the early stages of sending a manned mission to Mars, but that’s not what I have in store for you today. I’m talking about M.A.R.S., which is the acronym for Manuscript and Archives Reference System. MARS is the online catalog for the State Archives of North Carolina, the Outer Banks History Center, and the Western Regional Archives.[1] It is a database of searchable content for all three archives.
Official records of state, county, and local governmental units, and copies of federal government materials, in addition to manuscripts, books, photographs, slides, and negatives, periodicals and serials, maps, newspapers, and the list goes on. [2] It’s truly a goldmine for the serious, and not so serious, genealogist. This database is not limited to just North Carolina. When I did a quick search for Alabama, I got back 413 results; Georgia, 1,794 results; and even Texas I got back 326 results. So, what are you waiting for, let's go!
There is a video from M.A.R.S. which gets you started in the right direction. You can view it here. They also have other videos too which you can view on their YouTube channel here.
