SLIG 2016: A Photo Recap; Day 6

Well, it’s the final day. Nooo! Let’s have another week of learning! Today was the last day of researching the South. It turned out that our course co-coordinator, Kelvin Myers, was having a birthday today! Kelvin was surprised with fresh made birthday cupcakes (The best I’ve ever had). I think Anne Mitchell arranged all that. Also happening during our class sessions, Angela McGhie won a one year subscription to Ancestry World Explorer from Anne Mitchell of Ancestry.com.

At the end of our classes for the day, we were presented with our certificate of completion by Kelvin. Very nice indeed! I have to say, this has been well worth every penny and I’d do it again. Oh, wait, I am next year!

Later that evening I attended the pre-dinner party followed by dinner with the most moving talk by Judy G. Russell that I have ever heard from her. During dinner, SLIG board members thanked a lot of people for their support and even recognized me for my efforts in setting up a private Facebook group for students and teachers to talk to each other. Thanks Peg & Mary Jane! Oh, they approached me during the pre-dinner and asked if I would consider helping out with social media for next year. Wow! I was caught off guard. After about 5 seconds, I said, “Sure!” What have I gotten myself into now! I better step up my game.

SLIG 2016: A Photo Recap; Day 5

Yes, boys and girls, another full day of learning southern research methods at the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy. Seeing all the top genealogist from around the US and the world in one place is like a groupie backstage at a Led Zeppelin concert. After classes, I went back over to the Family History Library to delve into the microfilms for some marriage records. I found what I came for and a couple of other nuggets of information.

My companion for the microfilm readers was good friend Leslie Carney of Arizona. She picked out a row of readers that were empty and in the shadows…ooooh. But alas, it was because they were all left-handed machines! It didn’t phase me or her one bit. We stayed till almost closing time at 9:00 pm and then took the bus back to the Hilton. Oops, I forgot to do my homework assignment! I’ll just get up early and do it in the morning.

A snapshot outside the hotel during the day. Hardly any snow.

The surname map getting pretty full!

Good friend Valarie Lair got a paper cut in Dr. Jones' class.      Poor baby!

Microfilm research is always exciting!

I wonder how many microfilms there are in this library?

I hate threading the film into the readers!

I take pictures of the intro to the reels for reference.

I also take a picture of the index page with the person of interest.

My 2nd. great-grandparents marriage... happy dance!

It was very comfortable and not that packed tonight.

My little space.

A smile of contentment!

Adieu, until next year!

Back to the hotel for a good nights rest.

SLIG 2016: A Photo Recap; Day 4

Today was another full day of classes. During breaks I would head over to SLIG Central where I could socialize and have some coffee. Maia’s books had an impressive array of genealogical and historical books on display for purchase, which they shipped free for you! How could you beat that! So, I bought $130 worth of books… LOL.

At the end of the day, I took the lavish bus (Thanks, SLIG!) over to the Family History Library to do some squirrel hunting. Everywhere I looked were top genealogists I admire, mostly socializing, but a few were hard at work… Ha! I decided to research some US county books, so I went to that floor and to the Texas aisle to look through Upshur, Bastrop, Crosby, and Galveston counties. My friends, Amy Urman and Leslie Carney, just happened to be sitting next to me. Surprisingly, we didn’t really talk, we were so busy skimming the pages of our books and making copies onto flash drives. Today was quite productive indeed.
