NGS 2017 Raleigh: A Photo Recap; Day 2

Day 2; Thursday, 11 May 2017

Day two was all about learning and the first full day of classes I could attend. I met several new people today and people that I only knew from Facebook. It's nice to actually hear someone speak. I attended my first paid luncheon with LaBrenda Garret-Nelson, JD, LLM, CG, as the speaker. She gave an important and eye-opening lecture on Genealogy from the African-American perspective. After the all day class schedule, I was beat and decided to just relax in my hotel room and order dinner in. After falling asleep a little after 9:00 pm I was awoken by a loud noise outside. I sprung out of bed to find the hotel was being slammed by massive wind and rain. I thought we were being hit by a hurricane... LOL. Lightning flashes all throughout the sky too! This San Diego boy is not used to this! I turned on the news only to see a little ticker tape saying that a severe thunderstorm was moving through Wake County. Later, because I couldn't sleep now, on the 10 o'clock news they showed the radar images. It was gone within an hour... weird!

Classes I attended:

  • Finding Georgia Records with J. Mark Lowe, CG, FUGA (filling in for my friend Kristen Harms).
  • Info Overload? Effective Project Management, Research, Data Management & Analysis with Elizabeth Shown Mills CG, CGL, FASG, FNGS, FUGA.
  • Solving Complex Problems With Tax Lists with Gail Miller CG.
  • BCG Luncheon with LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, JD, LLM, CG, "Condemnation of Memory: Recalling That African American Genealogy Is American Genealogy".
  • The Virginia-North Carolina Connection with Barbara Vines Little CG, FNGS, FUGA, FVGS.
  • Baptist Ancestors in Tennessee and the Carolinas with Lori Thornton, MLIS.

Now for the pictures!

Most of the rooms were large and very comfortable.
